Set of two very beautiful original 19th century carved heavy wooden Victorian era dog inkwells with hinged head that opens to reveal the inkwells inside.

They are made of heavy Lignum Vitae or Pockwood, they both have glass eyes.
The bulldog has a real leather and velvet collar with metal fittings. Inside you'll see a brass click lidded holder with a glass ink container.
It measures D x W x H 9 x 6 x 9 cm (3.5 x 2.4 x 3.5")

The doberman pincher is bigger, under his hinged head you'll find a glass ink container.
It measures D x W x H 12 x 7 x 12cm (4.7 x 2.8 x 4.7")

Lignum vitae is Latin for wood of life. Its resin has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions from syphilis to arthritis. Lignum vitae is also called guayacan or guaiacum, palo santo, holy wood, bastard greenheart or Pockholz.
The trees are indigenous to the Caribbean and the northern coast of South America. The wood has an extraordinary characteristics combination of strength, toughness and density, it is heavy and it will easily sink in water.

Very nice set of little collector's items.
