Very pretty and heavy early 1900s Neo-Classical oval brass jewellery box with 2 moth decorations carved in agate.

The figures on the (I think machine made repoussé) side look like from Roman times.
The middle-eastern little tent shaped lid feels very Moorish, also the round glass 'gem stone' decorations look like the decoration on antique Moorish jewellery boxes.
The moths and rams heads make it more Egyptian.
This decorative box is a nice eclectic mix of everything the maker liked I think.

The striped agate is perfect to carve moths from, they look very real, the attached brass 'whiskers' and little feet make it complete. For centuries people around the world gave moths different symbolic significance, to name a few; fertility, transformation, attachment, disguise, unconditional love, spirits, intuition and psychic abilities.

The lid has a little secret, under the tent shaped lid there is space to hide little pieces.

On the bottom there is a piece of old tape marked in type writer PAUL DP 725, the other piece of tape is marked in pencil. This is harder to read but looks like RPRK 5/7.

Note: both agate moths seem to be missing the tip of their nose. the lighter moth has a little crack in his 'neck' piece. the darker moth misses his back fixture but still stays in place with his neck fixture.
