Swiss Brienz black forest hand carved linden wood begging poodle with brass matchbox holder and four brass cigar holders.
Black Forest wood carved art originates from a small mountain town Brienz, Switzerland.
In the 19th century travelling became populair among the rich and famous and Brienz attracted many tourists with being by the foot of a mountain, at a lake and near to the Giessbach Falls. Tourists were intrigued with the carved alpine and animal themes in Victorian times. Soon owning one of these sculptures was a status of luxury and wealth.
I'm always a big fan of animal related pieces like this to cheer up a serious pile of books for instance or to fun up a cabinet shelf. Anyhow this little fellow with his glass eyes is a very nice collector's item.
