19th Century Anglo-Indian Vizagapatam Stag Antler Horn and Sandalwood Hinged Box

Date: 19th Century
PRICE: SOLD
Dimensions: H 16cm W 37cm D 21cm
Shipping: $100

Very heavy and decorative mid-19th century Anglo-Indian sewing box made in Vizagapatam, India, circa 1860.

The box is made of sandalwood but covered in sections of carved antler horn and bone.
With working key and lock.

Anglo-Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents, they were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the 19th century they were imported more commercially. Sewing boxes for the ladies and document boxes for the men

This one unfortunately lost its 'sewing box' insert somewhere in the last 150 years, so now it would be more appropriate to keep documents in.

Note:
on the back 2 antler pieces have been replaced by 'fake' resin ones somewhere in the past
inside a piece of horn is glued back on
misses 'sewing box' insert, minor losses on the bone carving on top
