Very heavy and decorative mid-19th century Anglo-Indian sewing box made in Vizagapatam, India, circa 1860.

The box is made of sandalwood but covered in sections of carved antler horn and bone.

With working key and lock.

Anglo-Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents, they were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the 19th century they were imported more commercially. Sewing boxes for the ladies and document boxes for the men.

The fitted interior on the inside of the lid is classic Vizigapatam work, decorated and edged with hand painted bone and ebony veneer. Also the interior has a removable inner tray with eighteen little compartments for storage and two red velvet sections for needles and pins. Also decorated with painted bone and ebony veneer. Under the tray there is space for bigger things like pieces of fabric or scissors.

Just look at this collectors item, it shows incredible craftsmanship from the past, if boxes only still were made like this.

Note:
the hinge has been welded
key is not original
lids of inside compartment are missing
parts glued inside, some little not original screws inside
