Spectacular set of ten 1960s green Italian Empoli pressed and blown glass. Three genie bottles, a large dog shaped bottle and a cute cat shaped one. A large goblet, a high glass and pitcher by Wayne Husted. A Brutalist 'rock' shaped decanter a last but not least very pretty blown glass apothecary or candy jar.

Mention Italian glass and probably everyone’s mind immediately leaps to Venice and Murano.

But there is another almost equally famous centre of Italian glass making known as Empoli.

Empoli, a region where there were many glass companies, on the west side of Italy, southwest of Florence, has been producing and exporting glass since the 14th century. The trademark color "Empoli Green" known as “Empoli Verde" was created from the iron that occurred locally in the sands of the Empoli region. Empoli glass is generally much simpler and does not have the intricately applied trim or decorations associated with Venetian and Murano pieces.

The simple traditional styles of Empoli glass were quickly adapted to the abstract shapes of mid 20th century modernism. It became hugely popular as a decorative home accent, and was exported across the world.

Now they are highly sought after by international collectors and look beautiful arranged together.

Two items in this set are designed by Wayne Husted, a well known designer from the Blenko glassworks, USA. Produced by Stelvia or S.T.E.L.V.I.A. (Società Toscana Esercizio Lavorazione Vetri Industriali e Artistici) was established in the 1950s, in the region of Empoli, near Florence, Italy. These vases by Wayne Husted are part of their 1960s Antiqua range,

All bottles have their stopper and are different in design, shape and size (height with stopper):
Large swirl genie bottle, pressed glass, 64cm high, ø 13 (25.2" x 5.1")
Large woman shaped genie bottle with face, pressed glass, 65cm high, ø 12cm (25.6"x4,7")
Large genie bottle with fruit print, pressed glass, 54cm high, ø 13 (21.3"x5.1")
Large dog bottle, pressed glass, 56cm high, 24cm wide, 17cm deep (22"x9.5"x6.7")
Large cat bottle, pressed glass, 37cm high, 12cm wide, 10cm deep (14.6"x4.7"x3.9")
Brutalist glass by Wyne Husted on clear base foot, 30cm high, ø 10cm (11.8"x3.9")
Pressed glass pitcher by Wayne Husted with clear glass handle and pontil, 20cm high, 19cm wide, 11cm deep (7.9"x7.5"x4.3")
Blown glass goblet with clear pressed glass foot, 29cm high, ø 18cm (11.4"x7.1")
Brutalist 'rock' decanter, pressed glass, 26cm high, 15cm wide, 7cm deep (10.2"x5.9"x2.8")
Large blown glass candy or apothecary jar, 32cm high, ø 20cm (12.6"x7.9")

Like Murano glass in the 1950s-1960s the great majority of Empoli glass was marked only with relatively generic “Made in Italy” paper or foil label. Over time, many of the original labels have fallen off and the majority of Empoli MCM glass now is unmarked.
